Egypt urges Syrian-led political process following Assad’s overthrow
Egypt is calling for a comprehensive Syrian-led political process following the overthrow of President Bashar Al-Assad by opposition forces, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Tuesday.
The ministry stressed the need for a unified Syrian effort, free from external interference, to restore stability and rebuild the nation. This process, the statement said, should adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 2254, preserving Syria’s unity and encompassing all segments of society. The goal, according to the statement, is to allow all Syrians to participate in shaping their future, rebuilding state institutions, and restoring Syria’s standing in regional and international affairs.
Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to actively supporting this political process and working to ensure its success, fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people. The ministry also voiced its determination to prevent any actions that would compromise Syria’s sovereignty, unity, or territorial integrity, and to create conditions for the safe return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons.
Separately, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke by phone Tuesday with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, to discuss the situation in Syria. Both ministers agreed on the importance of continued coordination on regional issues, particularly concerning Syria, and the necessity of concerted regional and international efforts to uphold Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also concurred on the need for a Syrian-led political process to restore stability and alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.
Minister Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s position that this process must be genuinely Syrian-led, free from external interference, and must prevent any exploitation of the situation to the detriment of Syria’s interests, sovereignty, and territorial unity. He emphasized the need for an inclusive process that reflects Syria’s diverse society, ensuring no national groups are excluded. This approach, he stated, is crucial to paving the way for Syria’s return to stability and its rightful regional and international role.
