Egypt’s FM attends Paris meeting on implementing Gaza peace plan

Egypt’s foreign minister on Thursday participated in a ministerial meeting in Paris on implementing the US peace plan to end the war in Gaza, an event partially attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, where Cairo stressed the need to support the Palestinian Authority. This Egypt-backed deal which is being negotiated in Sharm El-Sheikh outlines a clear progression of events, including prisoner releases, increased aid delivery, and an initial Israeli withdrawal from specific areas in Gaza.

The meeting in the French capital was attended by foreign ministers and senior officials from France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Turkey, the United States, and the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

President Macron, who participated in a portion of the meeting, expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and the role of Egypt, in cooperation with Qatar and Turkey, in reaching the recent agreement in Sharm El-Sheikh, the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Abdelatty said that the U.S. peace plan provides a good basis for ending the war and affirmed Egypt’s support for it. He discussed the implementation of its first phase and other elements, including the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid and the topics of early recovery and reconstruction. He also highlighted plans for an international conference to be hosted in Cairo for Gaza’s reconstruction once the war ends.

Abdel-Aty stressed the importance of supporting the Palestinian Authority as the legitimate governing body capable of shouldering its responsibilities. He also expressed hope that the end of the war would be followed by a political track to resume negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian sides, which would support reconstruction efforts and restore stability.

Prior to the expanded ministerial meeting, Abdel-Aty also participated in a meeting of Arab foreign ministers with President Macron to discuss ways to advance the implementation of the peace plan.
