Egypt, Colombia Presidents discuss Gaza, bilateral cooperation in Cairo

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with Colombia President, Gustavo Petro, in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues, including the implementation of the Gaza peace agreement.

Sisi welcomed Petro on his second visit to Egypt and praised the deep historical ties between the two countries, affirming Egypt’s keenness to enhance cooperation, especially in economic and trade aspects, a presidency statement said.

The two leaders discussed prospects for cooperation in a number of vital sectors, including trade, renewable energy, aviation, and culture, in addition to exchanging expertise in combating transnational organised crime and terrorism.

For his part, the Colombian president expressed his appreciation for the growing bilateral relations and praised the significant increase in trade volume over the past five years. He also congratulated Sisi on the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which he described as a historic achievement.

Sisi reviewed the outcomes of the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit and the progress in implementing the Gaza war termination agreement, praising Colombia’s initiative to provide humanitarian aid to the strip. Petro commended Egypt’s intensive efforts to end the war and contain the humanitarian disaster, stressing the importance of full commitment to the ceasefire agreement and accelerating the reconstruction process.

Petro said Colombia is ready to be actively involved in the implementation of the agreement and wishes to continue providing humanitarian aid. Sisi noted that Egypt intends to host an international conference for the early recovery and reconstruction of the sector in November 2025.

In a separate statement, President Petro outlined several areas of discussion with Sisi. He said Colombia would participate with its public forces and resources in the reconstruction of Gaza, offering to help provide prosthetics for children and adults using its advances in mechatronics and 3D printing.

He added that Colombia, as a newly elected member of the U.N. Security Council, would act with “utmost wisdom” in the conflicts in Sudan and over the Nile River water between Ethiopia and Egypt.

Petro also said the two countries would articulate their police forces to combat drug mafias, human trafficking, and mercenaries. He called on Colombian investors, particularly from the Arab community, to invest in Egypt’s cotton and textile industry to bring fine fabrics to Colombia for quality garment manufacturing. The two sides also discussed multinational articulation to produce solar panels and clean energy in joint ventures.

“I feel very happy about the enormous affection that the Egyptian people have for Colombia, given its position against the genocide in Palestine,” Petro said. “We will help Egypt and the mediating countries, including the US, in the effort to achieve peace in Palestine.”
