Ministers of electricity, water resources discuss maximising hydropower returns at High Dam

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat held a meeting with Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital to review joint cooperation and strategies to enhance the performance of Egypt’s hydropower stations.

The two ministers affirmed their commitment to coordination and joint action aimed at improving efficiency, upgrading facilities, and increasing the capacity of hydropower stations to enhance national grid stability and optimise the use of water resources in electricity generation.

The discussions align with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy’s strategy to improve generation efficiency and maximise the economic and environmental value of water resources. The plan seeks to expand the role of hydropower as a key stabilising element within the national grid and support the state’s broader strategy to increase clean and renewable energy’s share in the electricity mix to 42% by 2030 and 65% by 2040.

The meeting underscored the strategic importance of hydropower as one of Egypt’s most cost-effective and sustainable energy sources. Both sides discussed mechanisms for deeper cooperation between the relevant departments at the Ministries of Electricity and Water Resources to manage, modernise, and maximise returns from existing hydropower assets, particularly within the High Dam complex in Aswan.

Esmat emphasised the government’s commitment to upgrading and modernising all major hydropower stations — including the High Dam, Aswan I, Aswan II, Nagaa Hammadi, Esna, and Assiut — which collectively generate around 2,832 MW. He highlighted the importance of these facilities in maintaining grid stability, improving electricity quality, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“The High Dam remains one of Egypt’s most important and enduring renewable energy assets,” Esmat said. “We are working to enhance its efficiency and maximise its contribution to the national power system through continuous upgrades and technological modernisation.”

For his part, Hani Sewilam reaffirmed the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation’s commitment to maintaining close coordination with the Ministry of Electricity to ensure the optimal integration of technical and operational systems. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the High Dam and Aswan Reservoir Authority and the Hydropower Plants Production Company to achieve the highest levels of technical synchronisation and resource efficiency.

Both ministers agreed to continue efforts to advance hydropower development, expand generation capacity, and strengthen Egypt’s leadership in clean energy, in line with the country’s long-term sustainable development and climate goals.
