Amazon Egypt Sees Prime Day as Key Driver of Value, Digital Growth
Amazon Egypt views Prime Day as more than a seasonal shopping event, positioning it as a key opportunity to deliver value to Egyptian consumers, support local sellers, and contribute to the country’s growing digital economy, according to Omar Elsahy, General Manager, Amazon Egypt.
Q: Prime Day is back — what is the significance of this event for Amazon Egypt and the Egyptian shopper?
A: At Amazon, we don’t see Prime Day as just a traditional discounts season or a fleeting commercial event. It is our biggest annual shopping event for Prime members and an opportunity to deliver true value that goes beyond deals and discounts.
Prime Day brings together hundreds of thousands of exclusive deals across categories, including electronics, fashion, home appliances, and everyday essentials from top local and international brands.
We are encouraged by seeing how customers in Egypt anticipate this event and plan their purchases in advance. This awareness places a great responsibility on us, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to delivering an exceptional shopping experience that combines selection, quality, and competitive prices to help customers make the most out of their purchases.
Q: How do you see Egyptian shoppers’ expectations evolving in e-commerce?
A: Egyptian consumers have become more conscious, making deliberate purchasing decisions based on value for money. Recent research from HarrisX shows that 87% of Egyptian consumers are more likely to shop during sales or promotional events, while 85% compare prices before purchasing.
That is not passive shopping — it reflects intentional, informed decision-making.
At Amazon Egypt, we see this shift in consumer behavior as a positive challenge that drives us to continuously improve. We focus on understanding our customers’ evolving needs and priorities and build our operations and partnerships around them, ensuring we remain their preferred shopping destination.
Q: What makes a Prime membership different from traditional loyalty programs in Egypt?
A: Amazon Prime is not a points-based loyalty program. It is a paid membership designed to deliver seamless, integrated everyday value that enhances customers’ quality of life.
Unlike traditional loyalty programs, where customers must accumulate points over time to unlock rewards, Prime members receive immediate access to a full suite of benefits from the moment they subscribe.
Members value different benefits based on their individual needs. Some prioritize fast delivery, while others focus on savings and exclusive deals. HarrisX research shows that 91% of Egyptian consumers associate Prime membership with exclusive deals and discounts, 90% with free delivery, and 88% with fast delivery.
The strength of Prime lies in bringing all of these benefits together within one membership, offering customers a seamless and flexible subscription for EGP 29 per month or EGP 249 per year.
Q: Some may view membership programs as a way to lock customers in. How do you respond to that?
A: Customer behavior has evolved toward complete flexibility and genuine value. At Amazon, we follow the principle of Customer Obsession, which means that the only bond we have with our customers is sustained trust and tangible value.
There are no points to lose, no tiers to maintain, and no penalties for leaving. If a customer does not find real benefits that make their life easier and help them save on their everyday budget, they can cancel their subscription immediately.
We don’t retain customers through constraints or sunk-cost psychology. We earn their trust every day by continuously enhancing our logistics and operations to deliver a service that exceeds expectations.
Q: Is there a risk that customers only shop on Prime Day?
A: Prime Day and other shopping seasons like Eid and Ramadan are important peak periods and milestones. However, they often serve as a launching pad for building sustainable, long-term relationships with new customers.
A customer may discover Amazon through a specific promotion, but once they experience the seamless shopping journey — reliable delivery, broad selection, and flexible payment options — they realize that the value Amazon Egypt delivers is not seasonal. It is a consistent, everyday commitment.
Amazon Prime membership provides exclusive deals throughout the year, additional discounts through banking partners, fast and free delivery, and entertainment through Prime Video.
Q: With a major football season taking place this summer, how does this impact shopping behavior among Egyptians?
A: During major sporting and cultural moments, convenience and reliability evolve from added benefits into essential customer expectations.
Research shows that more than 25% of shoppers consider the ability to place a last-minute order an absolute necessity during these events, while 29% value reliable delivery that arrives on time.
This is where the strength of Amazon Egypt’s last-mile operations becomes evident. We prepare for these seasons by optimizing storage capacity across our fulfillment centers, which reach nearly 100,000 cubic meters, and activating our nationwide delivery network of 26 stations across 25 governorates.
Q: Egypt’s Vision 2030 has a strong digital economy component. How does Amazon.eg contribute to that broader national goal?
A: This is at the heart of our long-term investment strategy in Egypt. We do not see Amazon Egypt merely as a store, but as part of Egypt’s digital infrastructure contributing to the empowerment of the local digital economy.
As we scale our business, we directly empower thousands of local sellers, small and medium enterprises, and entrepreneurs to participate in the digital economy and build sustainable businesses by connecting them to millions of customers.
Events like Prime Day grant a startup in Upper Egypt or a brand in Cairo the opportunity to compete fairly and grow digitally. Today, the Amazon Egypt team includes approximately 2,000 employees, while our operations and investments support tens of thousands of job opportunities.
Q: How does Prime Day create value for sellers?
A: Prime Day is an exceptional growth opportunity for our selling partners. During this event, we provide them with significant commercial visibility, reaching millions of customers who are ready to make purchasing decisions.
Our business model relies on a sustainable and interconnected growth cycle: strong customer traffic attracts more local sellers, a broader seller base expands selection and choice for customers, and greater selection delivers more value and competitive pricing.
We also provide sellers with advanced inventory management and data analytics tools to help them meet high demand and operate efficiently.
Q: With AI becoming more prevalent across industries, how is Amazon using AI to improve the shopping experience in Egypt?
A: Artificial intelligence plays an increasingly important role in enhancing the customer experience in ways that are not always visible to customers.
At Amazon, we believe technology is not a goal in itself. It is a tool to solve real problems and improve the efficiency of the overall experience. Our approach rests on three main pillars: optimizing customer experience, supporting sellers, and increasing operational efficiency.
We use routing solutions, capacity management systems, and demand prediction to ensure product availability and accelerate shipping operations across delivery stations. We also use AI-driven recommendation systems to deliver a more personalized shopping experience.
We have also launched features such as Amazon Lens, which allows customers to search using images and barcode scanning instead of text, making product discovery faster and easier.
Q: What would you say to someone who has not tried Prime yet and is on the fence?
A: The experience itself is always the best proof. That is why I always encourage customers to try Amazon Prime.
At Amazon, we believe that trust is earned through experience, not promises. With Prime Day around the corner, there is no better time to experience the benefits — from exclusive deals on everyday purchases to fast and reliable delivery.
We continuously improve by listening to our customers, and I am confident that the combination of value and convenience that Prime offers will speak for itself from the very first experience.
