Egypt, Türkiye push to restore US-Iran negotiations to avoid military escalation
Egypt and Türkiye have called for intensified joint efforts to restore the negotiation track between the United States and Iran to reach a final diplomatic agreement and prevent the risk of regional military escalation.
The stance was agreed during a phone call on Saturday between Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, during which they discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.
The two ministers emphasised the importance of lowering escalation and containing tensions in the region. They also reviewed coordination within a four-way regional mechanism that includes Egypt, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, stressing the need to address security concerns through dialogue, respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs.
Turning to the Palestinian issue, Abdelatty and Fidan rejected any attempts to displace the Palestinian people. They called for an immediate halt to the escalation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, whilst demanding guaranteed, full access for humanitarian aid.
On bilateral ties, the ministers praised the rapid acceleration of relations across various levels. They affirmed their commitment to building on this progress and following up on the outcomes of the first High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting, which was held in Cairo in February 2026 under the co-presidency of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The officials noted the importance of enhancing strategic dialogue and boosting economic and trade cooperation.
The ministers also exchanged assessments on the situations in Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, and Libya, underscoring their support for efforts aimed at achieving security and stability while maintaining the unity and sovereignty of state institutions across the region.
