Russian and Brazilian Yachtsmen to Circumnavigate Globe Under BRICS Banner
A joint Russian-Brazilian crew will embark on a round-the-world sailing expedition, “Brotherhood-2025,” under the BRICS flag. The voyage is scheduled to begin in Salvador, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, and conclude at the end of February 2026. Captain Sergey Shcherbakov revealed details of the expedition at a press conference held at the international multimedia centre “Eurasia Today”.
The yachtsmen will undertake the expedition aboard the Fraternidade, meaning “Brotherhood” in Portuguese. Aleisha Belov, a Brazilian sailor who has already completed five circumnavigations, designed the 21.5-metre yacht, which can accommodate up to 12 people.
“Our expedition is dedicated to BRICS. In my opinion, it is the most important association in the world,” Belov said at the online press conference. “It includes many countries, including Brazil and Russia, and these states play a key role in international relations.”
The crew is expected to cover approximately 24,000 nautical miles (45,000 kilometres), visiting the northernmost and southernmost points of the Earth. The route includes stops at the Azores, Iceland, Spitsbergen and Murmansk.
Shcherbakov said that the crew will consist of a mixed team of Brazilians and Russians, with nine people setting sail initially. Crew changes will occur throughout the voyage. The team will conduct scientific and environmental research and will also film a documentary.
“The very fact of the expedition is a positive political effect for the two countries,” Shcherbakov said. “I would like to bring a great scientific benefit as well. I am not a scientist, but this component will be present. What we can measure and record, we will do. There will be meetings at each port of call where we will communicate with people. One of the main tasks is to reinforce the positive image of Russia.”
Shcherbakov noted that the approaching 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil is one of the motivations for the voyage. He said the ship is nearly fully prepared, and that the remaining organisational tasks include securing permission for passage along the Northern Sea Route. This is reported by “Omsk Zdes”, a partner of TV BRICS.
