Sala Thai marks 34 years in Cairo with new honour, launch of Sala Thai Mart

The Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo hosted a dual celebration last Sunday at the renowned Sala Thai restaurant, marking two milestones in one day. The event featured the formal renewal of the prestigious “Thai SELECT” Quality Certification, followed by the grand opening of “Sala Thai Mart,” a new marketplace dedicated to authentic Thai products.

These celebrations reaffirm Sala Thai’s role as a cornerstone of Thai culture and commerce in Egypt. The ceremony was attended by Thai officials, diplomats, and representatives from the Office of Commercial Affairs, Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo.

A Legacy of Authentic Thai Taste

The Thai SELECT certification, issued by Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, is an international mark of excellence granted to restaurants that preserve the genuine flavors of Thai cuisine through traditional ingredients and cooking techniques. Receiving this accreditation underscores Sala Thai’s commitment to maintaining the true taste of Thailand for more than three decades.

Reflecting on the restaurant’s legacy, Thanawat Sirikul, the Thai Ambassador to Egypt, expressed his pride: “This is a special day because we are here to celebrate Sala Thai, which many people still remember by its former name, Bua Khaw. This restaurant has been part of Cairo for an impressive 34 years, making it one of the longest-standing Thai restaurants in Egypt.”

He continued: “I would like to extend my congratulations to Sala Thai for receiving the Thai SELECT certification continuously for more than 20 years. This award symbolizes quality and dedication—it reflects the commitment and heart of every team member.”

The Ambassador also highlighted Sala Thai’s cultural importance: “Throughout these years, Sala Thai has not only maintained authentic Thai flavors but has also become like a ‘second home’ for the Thai community in Egypt. At the same time, it has been a destination for Egyptian friends who wish to explore Thai culture through its cuisine.”

Launch of Sala Thai Mart

Coinciding with the award presentation was the official launch of Sala Thai Mart, a first-of-its-kind market in Egypt offering premium Thai ingredients and handicrafts. The new mart aims to make authentic Thai products more accessible to local consumers while strengthening cultural ties between Thailand and Egypt.

Shoppers can find a diverse range of goods—from spices, herbs, and specialty noodles to organic brown rice and handcrafted souvenirs that celebrate Thailand’s artistic heritage. Designed for home cooks and Asian cuisine enthusiasts alike, the mart provides everything needed to recreate genuine Thai dishes in local kitchens.

Ambassador Sirikul shared his enthusiasm: “Even more exciting is the launch of Sala Thai Mart, the first Thai supermarket in Egypt. I believe it will serve as a hub for high-quality Thai products—such as fragrant jasmine rice, rich coconut milk, and fresh herbs—and as a bridge connecting Thai and Egyptian people through the flavors and aromas of Thai cuisine.”

He concluded with a heartfelt message: “I wish Sala Thai and Sala Thai Mart continued prosperity. May they remain centers of delicious food, warmth, and friendship between Thailand and Egypt for many years to come.”

With its renewed Thai SELECT certification and the launch of Sala Thai Mart, the restaurant continues its mission of celebrating Thai culture in Egypt—offering not just a meal, but an authentic experience of Thailand’s culinary heritage.
