Egypt’s FM joins Sahel region roundtable at Aswan Forum
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Sunday participated in a roundtable discussion on the Sahel region, where he stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to combating terrorism that includes developmental and ideological dimensions.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, was attended by the foreign ministers of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Angola, as well as envoys from the African Union and the European Union, and representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank, and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
Abdelatty called for concerted efforts to support Sahel countries in the face of terrorism, which he described as a global, transnational phenomenon. He highlighted Egypt’s programmes for training and capacity-building for national cadres from the Sahel, as well as the role of Al-Azhar in countering extremist thought and spreading values of moderation.
“Egypt will continue its support for development initiatives and institution-building projects, which contribute to enhancing the capabilities of Sahel countries to address the roots of extremism and achieve long-term security and stability,” Abdelatty said, according to a ministry statement.
He stressed that Egypt’s successful experience in combating terrorism has proven the necessity of a comprehensive approach that extends beyond the security dimension.
The roundtable participants exchanged views on the security, political, and economic developments in the Sahel region and the common challenges facing its countries. They affirmed the importance of coordinating international and regional efforts to support the region’s states and adopting a comprehensive approach that combines security, development, and ideological solutions while strengthening national capacities.
