Upper Egypt development projects integrate environmental standards in new government review
Upper Egypt’s ongoing industrial, production, and service projects were the focus of a review by Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad and Head of the Upper Egypt Development Authority Amr Abdel Moneim, with both officials mandating the integration of environmental standards into all regional investments.
The projects currently underway for the current fiscal year include the establishment of a food industries complex in the New Valley governorate, a sugarcane seedlings project in Qena, and an onion and garlic drying factory in Sohag.
During the meeting, the officials discussed mechanisms to embed environmental dimensions into the authority’s targeted investment, industrial, and agricultural activities, aiming to create job opportunities for local residents while preserving natural resources.
Awad stated the ministry seeks to maximise the use of the competitive advantages, natural resources, and human capital available in Upper Egypt. She emphasised the need to align the ministry’s development programmes with the authority to support economic clusters and manufacturing sectors.
The minister noted that supporting the authority and state institutions aligns with presidential directives to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development, improve living standards, and provide jobs in the region through enhanced partnerships.
Abdel Moneim indicated the authority is prioritising partnerships with the public and private sectors, signing protocols with investors and government bodies to boost investment opportunities, support small and medium-sized enterprises, develop heritage crafts, and expand value-added projects.
He added that continuous coordination with the ministry aims to focus on agricultural and animal manufacturing alongside craft and productive activities, ensuring environmental aspects are considered to achieve sustainable economic development in Upper Egypt.
