Egyptian and Mozambican foreign ministers discuss regional security and SADC medical distribution
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty and Mozambican Foreign Minister Maria Lucas met on Monday to discuss enhancing economic, security, and pharmaceutical cooperation, including expanding medicine distribution within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The talks, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, focused on encouraging the Egyptian private sector to support Mozambique’s national development plans in infrastructure, energy, education, and capacity building.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Tamim Khalaf, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s commitment to supporting African nations in addressing health challenges. The Egyptian minister noted the potential to build on existing cooperation in pharmaceutical manufacturing and to exchange expertise between the two countries’ drug authorities to facilitate broader medical distribution across the SADC region.
Abdelatty also emphasised the importance of enhancing security and military cooperation, particularly utilising Egyptian expertise in counter-terrorism. He cited further capacity-building opportunities through training programmes organised by Al-Azhar, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development, and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding.
The ministers exchanged views on establishing stability, security, peace, and development in Africa, with a specific focus on the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.
The two sides agreed to continue strengthening coordination on bilateral and multilateral levels and expressed a mutual desire to expedite the convening of the third session of the joint committee between the two countries to serve shared interests and support broader African stability.
